August 26, 2026 — A massive wall of mud and rock collapsed into a river along the Himalayan border between Nepal and Tibet on Wednesday, unleashing catastrophic flooding that killed scores of people and left hundreds of tourists missing.

From the moment this disaster struck, our volunteers have been preparing rescue missions and assessing emergency supplies needed for relief efforts.

The Tzu Chi Foundation is currently in close contact with government authorities and actively planning upcoming rescue operations.

We are awaiting instructions from the authorities to enter the disaster site, as access is temporarily restricted for safety reasons.

Most of the victims’ bodies have been carried by the floodwaters downstream to areas near Lumbini- Chitwan District, approximately 170–200km away from Lumbini. Reports indicate that local Chitwan morgues are currently overwhelmed, with more than 100 bodies received.

Tzu Chi volunteers are now conducting on‑site assessments in Chitwan to plan long‑term relief and recovery work.
